Biografia:

Grupo rock britânico formado em 1968, os Led Zeppelin nasceram das cinzas dos Yardbirds. Jimmy Page tinha estado nessa banda, por altura da gravação do seu último trabalho, Little Games (1967). Depois desse álbum, os Yardbirds passaram por uma fase de inatividade que acabaria por levar à sua dissolução. Robert Plant é convidado a integrar o novo projeto de Page em 1968. Com John Paul Jones, que já havia trabalhado com Page, como baixista, e John Bonham, baterista da anterior banda de Plant, formaram-se os New Yardbids. Em outubro de 1968, com apenas 30 horas de sessões, gravaram o primeiro álbum e mudaram o nome para Led Zeppelin.

Ainda antes do final do ano, conseguiram um contrato com a Atlantic Records. Já em 1969, partiram na primeira digressão por território americano e lançaram o disco de estreia, Led Zeppelin. Dois meses após o lançamento, o álbum figurava nos primeiros 10 lugares da tabela de vendas nos EUA. O ano de 1969 foi particularmente ativo para a banda, dividida entre as sessões de gravação do segundo álbum e os espetáculos da digressão. Ainda nesse ano, chegou às lojas Led Zeppelin II. O disco liderou a tabelas de vendas americanas durante sete semanas.
Em 1970, o grupo lançou Led Zeppelin III, um disco que mostrava algumas influências da música tradicional britânica. A relação de proximidade entre a banda e a música britânica, além da atração pela mitologia, foram o mote para o álbum seguinte, editado em 1971, Led Zeppelin IV. O disco revelou um esforço da banda em diversificar a sua música, colhendo o melhor do rock pesado que os caracterizava e misturando-o, de forma pacífica, com as influências do folk inglês. Assim se explica a coexistência de temas como "Black Dog" e "Stairway to Heaven" no mesmo disco. Aliás, estes dois temas, de perfil contrastante entre si, tornaram-se duas das canções mais emblemáticas da banda. Apesar de nunca ter atingido a liderança da tabela de vendas nos EUA, o quarto disco foi o mais bem-sucedido, vendendo, até hoje, mais de 16 milhões de cópias.

Entretanto, a promoção dos álbuns dos Led Zeppelin continuou a assentar nos concertos ao vivo, embora a banda assumisse o propósito de atuar com menor frequência mas para públicos de maior dimensão.
Em 1973, o disco Houses of the Holy revelou o experimentalismo contínuo do grupo, recorrendo a umas pitadas de reggae e de funk . O êxito do disco lançou o grupo para uma massiva digressão em solo americano, batendo recordes de audiência históricos. Exemplo disso mesmo, o concerto no Madison Square Garden, que pode ser visto no vídeo The Song Remais The Same (1976).
O ano de 1974 marcou o retiro da banda e a criação de uma editora própria, a Swan Song, que haveria de lançar todos os álbuns subsequentes dos Led Zeppelin. Physical Graffiti (1975) foi o primeiro, chegando a número um nos EUA e na Grã-Bretanha. A digressão desse ano teve que ser cancelada, por força de um acidente de viação de Robert Plant.

O álbum Presence (1976), apesar de não ter recebido críticas muito favoráveis, liderou as tabelas de vendas. No ano seguinte, nova digressão cancelada, em respeito pelo falecimento do filho de Plant. Este infortúnio e o afastamento voluntário de Plant por um período prolongado deram azo a especulações sobre a continuidade da banda. O grupo só retornou ao trabalho de estúdio no final do ano de 1978. Ainda antes da edição do disco, os Led Zeppelin partiram para uma pequena digressão europeia, passando pela Suíça, Alemanha, Holanda, Bélgica e Áustria. Em agosto de 1979, o grupo teve duas atuações em Knebworth, que acabariam por ser os últimos concertos em solo britânico.
O muito aguardado In Through The Out Door (1979) entrou diretamente para a liderança no Reino Unido e nos EUA. Em maio do ano seguinte, o grupo realizaria a última digressão europeia. A 25 de setembro, John Bonham é encontrado morto e, em dezembro, a banda anuncia a sua dissolução.

Após a separação do grupo, os membros restantes iniciaram carreiras a solo. A banda reuniu-se para atuar no Live Aid, em 1985, mas esse reagrupamento não teve continuidade, a não ser noutra atuação esporádica, no concerto do vigésimo quinto aniversário da Atlantic (1988).
Nos anos 90, alguns projetos medianamente bem-sucedidos, do par Page-Plant, trouxeram alguma expectativa do regresso dos míticos Led Zeppelin. Os rumores nunca passaram disso mesmo e as únicas edições relativas aos Zeppelin foram compilações. Entre elas, uma nota de referência para a caixa especial Early Days & Latter Days: Vol. 1 & 2 (2002), uma coleção dos principais êxitos do grupo. Em 2003, How The West Was Won, registava concertos de 1972, em plena costa californiana (Infopédia; português lusitano).
