Biografia:

Esse fundamental grupo britânico de R&B foi formado em Londres no ano de 1963, quando Keith Relf (nascido em 22 de março de 1943, em Richmond, Surrey, Inglaterra, e morto em 14 de maio 1976; vocais e harmônica) e Paul Samwell-Smith (nascido em 8 de maio de 1943, em Richmond, Surrey, Inglaterra; baixo), membros da banda semiacústica Metropolis Blues Quartet, uniram-se a Chris Dreja (nascido em 11 de novembro de 1944, em Surbiton, Surrey, Inglaterra; guitarra rítmica), Tony "Top" Topham (guitarra) e Jim McCarty (nascido em 25 julho de 1943, em Liverpool, Inglaterra; bateria). 

Em poucos meses, Topham decidiu continuar os estudos acadêmicos, tendo sido substituído, em outubro, por Eric Clapton (nome verdadeiro: Eric Clapp, nascido em 30 de março de 1945, em Ripley, Surrey, Inglaterra). O reconstituído grupo modelou um estilo baseado no clássico R&B de Chicago e rapidamente acumulou admiradores no incipiente circuito de blues. E acabou sucedendo os Rolling Stones como atração fixa na Crawdaddy, popular casa noturna de Richmond, cujo proprietário, Giorgio Gomelsky, passou, em seguida, a empresariá-lo. Dois entusiásticos – porém discretos – singles, "I Wish You Would" e "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", despertaram a atenção dos críticos, mas a prosperidade do quinteto desenvolveu-se com o lançamento de "Five Live Yardbirds". Gravado durante uma temporada no Marquee, o álbum captou a excitação física da banda, destacando-se pela excepcional interpretação de "Smokestack Lightning", de Howlin Wolf.

Clapton surgiu como referencial do grupo, mas pruridos musicais impuseram a sua saída em março de 1965, na sequência do magnífico terceiro single, "For Your Love". Escrita por Graham Gouldman, a canção pareceu comercial demais  – e, portanto, inaceitável – para o guitarrista, apesar da sonoridade inovadora. Clapton ressurgiu adiante nas bandas John Mayall's Bluesbreakers e Derek And The Dominos, até protagonizar uma altamente bem-sucedida carreira solo. Jeff Beck (nascido em 24 de junho de 1944, em Surrey, Inglaterra), ex-Tridents, filiou-se à Yardbirds no tempo em que o single "For Your Love" alcançava o l° lugar na parada da New Musical Express, do Reino Unido. Gouldman forneceu mais sucessos: "Heartful Of Soul" e "Evil Hearted You", a segunda fazendo tabelinha nas paradas com "Still I'm Sad", composta pela banda. Baseada num canto gregoriano, "Still I'm Sad" sinalizou uma tendência à experimentação, prevalecente em "Shapes Of Things", com influência indiana, na caótica "Over Under Sideways Down" e na excelente "Roger The Engineer".

Àquela altura, Simon Napier-Bell tornara-se o empresário da banda. Insatisfeito com as turnês e a atitude por vezes irreverente do grupo, Samwell-Smith caiu fora em junho de 1966. O ingresso de Jimmy Page (nome verdadeiro: James Patrick Page, nascido em 9 de janeiro de 1944, em Heston, Middlesex, Inglaterra), respeitado guitarrista de estúdio, provocou o deslocamento de Dreja para o baixo, consolidando a Yardbirds com dois guitarristas poderosos e arrebatadores. O criativo single "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" confirmou as expectativas. Todavia, seis meses depois, Beck saiu no meio de uma cansativa excursão americana. O grupo seguiu como um quarteto, mas, apesar da crescente reputação no cenário underground ianque, seu apelo popular decrescera. Não obstante as posteriores colaborações com o produtor mercantilista Mickie Most, os singles, incluindo "Little Games", de 1967, e "Goodnight Sweet Josephine", de 1968, não alcançaram as paradas.

O desapontador "Little Games" nem mereceu lançamento no Reino Unido, o que não o impediu de fazer sucesso nos Estados Unidos. Seguiram-se dois bizarros êxitos americanos: "Ha Ha Said The Clown" e "Ten Little Indians" (composição de Nilsson). Após Relf e McCarty manifestarem o desejo de adotar um estilo folk, a banda resolveu separar-se em julho de 1968. Na continuação, Page fundou a Led Zeppelin, Dreja tornou-se um renomado fotógrafo, ao passo que o duo restante engajou-se nas trajetórias das bandas Together, inicialmente, e Renaissance, mais tarde.

O legado da Yardbirds é imortal, calcado sobretudo na fama alcançada por seus ex-guitarristas. Relf morreu eletrocutado em 1976. McCarty e Dreja, na década de 80, uniram-se a Samwell-Smith – agora um conceituado produtor musical – na Box Of Frogs. Quando a efêmera banda extinguiu-se, os três retomaram suas carreiras individuais. McCarty permaneceu ativo no cenário musical como membro dos grupos British Invasion All-Stars e Yardbirds Experience. 

Em 1992, McCarty e Dreja realizaram uma série de concertos nostálgicos em Londres para celebrar a inclusão da Yardbirds no Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Os dois músicos reuniram-se novamente em 1996, com uma base mais consistente, e, no novo milênio, gravaram "Birdland", disco de estúdio lançado pela Favored Nations em 2003, com vários nomes famosos reforçando o lineup. De qualquer modo, a adição de Steve Vai, Jeff Baxter e Slash para executar novas versões dos antigos sucessos da Yardbirds causou pouco impacto.

O fascínio da Yardbirds ainda perdura e a banda segue aclamada como pioneira no uso de efeitos técnicos e formulação psicodélica. O bluseiro grupo mantém sua credibilidade como verdadeiro precursor do primitivo R&B britânico, clássico do pop experimental e primeiro expoente do rock pesado (The Encyclopedia Of Popular Music.
