Biografia:
A Sensational Alex Harvey Band estruturou-se em 1972, quando o veterano vocalista Alex Harvey (nascido no dia 5 de fevereiro de 1935, em Gorbals, Glasgow, Escócia, e morto no dia 4 de fevereiro de 1982, em Zeebrugge, Bélgica) uniu-se ao esforçado grupo Tear Gas, de Glasgow. Zal Cleminson (nascido no dia 4 de maio de 1949; guitarra), Hugh McKenna (nascido no dia 28 de novembro de 1949; teclados), Chris Glen (nascido no dia 6 de novembro de 1950, em Paisley, Renfrewshire, Escócia; baixo) e Ted McKenna (nascido no dia 10 de março de 1950, em Glasgow, Escócia; bateria) forneceram a Harvey a força primitiva que o seu som indomado e rasgado precisava, tornando-se o contraponto perfeito para a teatralidade que o cantor cultivou.
Guarnecido pelo seu patrimônio musical e cultural, Harvey embarcou numa direção invulgar, combinando elementos de rock pesado, R&B e variedades. Criou o menino favelado Vambo, celebrou a ficção sensacionalista com "Sergeant Fury" e exaltou a paixão pela cultura dos filmes B em "Don't Worry About The Lights Mother, They're Burning Big Louie Tonight". "Framed", o primeiro disco da SAHB, veio acompanhado de um período frenético de apresentações ao vivo, ao passo que "Next..." refletiu uma segurança consequente, especialmente manifesta na faixa-título, uma interpretação energética da música de Jacques Brel, bem à feição do cantor francês.
O quinteto continuou ascendendo comercialmente com "The Impossible Dream" e "Tomorrow Belongs To Me", enquanto sua reputação como conjunto robustecia-se através de uma série de excelentes e cada vez mais ambiciosos shows. A presença de Harvey mostrou-se um fator determinante no apelo visual do grupo, mas a esperteza em compor Cleminson como um mímico palhaço também moldou a criativa caracterização da SAHB. "Live", de 1975, sintetizou a irreverente época, com a performance exagerada de "Delilah", sucesso de Tom Jones, que propiciou à banda chegar ao Top 10 do Reino Unido. Seu êxito acarretou "The Penthouse Tapes", que incluiu algumas das destoantes predileções da banda: "Crazy Horses" (Osmonds), "School's Out" (Alice Cooper) e "Goodnight Irene" (Lead Belly).
A banda desfrutou outro hit com "Boston Tea Party" (1976), porém a agenda apertada cobrou seu preço ao vocalista, que se hospitalizou para tratar de um reiterado problema de fígado. Enquanto isso, o resto da SAHB gravou "Fourplay" (sem Harvey, obviamente). Na sequência, Tommy Eyre substituiu Hugh McKenna. Harvey retornou em agosto de 1977 para a gravação de "Rock Drill". Contudo, três meses depois, abandonou um ensaio do programa Sight And Sound, da BBC. Constrangido, o cantor admitiu que voltara prematuramente, dada a gravidade da sua doença. Apesar de desenvolver sua carreira solo em ritmo comedido, Harvey morreu de infarto no dia 4 de fevereiro de 1982. Ted McKenna, Cleminson e Glen, por sua vez, já haviam formado a Zal, com Billy Rankin (guitarra) e Leroi Jones (vocais), que, porém, durou pouco: sucumbindo ao movimento punk, expirou em abril de 1978. McKenna juntou-se posteriormente a Rory Gallagher e ao Michael Schenker Group, enquanto Cleminson integrou brevemente a Nazareth.
Em 1992, os membros originais da banda reuniram-se com o nome de Sensational Party Boys, angariando popularidade na sua nativa Glasgow e em áreas adjacentes. Mas, em agosto de 1993, o grupo resgatou a antiga denominação (SAHB) e o primitivo lineup (nota minha: no original consta: "menos Harvey"; é difícil imaginar alguma coisa diferente...). O confiável vocalista Stevie Doherty (nascido no dia 17 de julho de 1959, em Coatbridge, Escócia), ex-membro das bandas Strangeway e Zero Zero, cantou o pretérito repertório da banda com grande presença e vigor e sem imitar Harvey. A banda reagrupou-se pela segunda vez, no novo milênio, com Billy Rankin e Max Maxwell revezando-se, sequencialmente, no microfone (AllMusic; tradução livre do inglês).
