Eric Clapton (nome verdadeiro: Eric Patrick Clapp, nascido em 30 de março de 1945, em Ripley, Surrey, Inglaterra), formou essa banda fugaz em maio de 1970, após sua saída do supergrupo
Blind Faith e do seu breve envolvimento com o informal e despretensioso grupo
Delaney And Bonnie And Friends. Deste, ele empalmou três membros: Carl Radle (nascido em 24 de agosto de 1942, em Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, EUA, e falecido em 30 de maio de 1980, em Tulsa, Oklahoma, EUA; baixo), Bobby Whitlock (teclados e vocais) e Jim Gordon (bateria).
Junto com Duane Allman (nome verdadeiro: Howard Duane Allman, nascido em 20 de novembro de 1946, em Nashville, Tennessee, EUA, e falecido em 29 de outubro de 1971, em Macon, Georgia, EUA ), integrante da
Allman Brothers Band, na guitarra, a banda gravou "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs". Esse soberbo disco duplo capturou uma das canções mais memoráveis de Clapton, "Layla", um apelo desesperado pelo amor da mulher de
George Harrison, Patti(e). A banda durou apenas um ano, período em que excursionou pelo Reino Unido, tocando em pequenas boates, e também pelos Estados Unidos, consumindo grandes quantidades de álcool e drogas, leves e pesadas. Foi aí que Clapton tornou-se viciado em heroína. Isso, no entanto, não influiu na qualidade da música.
Além da cultuada "Layla", o álbum continha composições de Clapton, em coautoria, misturadas com clássicos bluseiros, como "Key To The Highway", e uma atraente leitura de "Little Wing", de
Jimi Hendrix. O subsequente disco ao vivo, gravado na turnê americana, foi mais uma demonstração do considerável potencial da Derek And The Dominos, que certamente se materializaria acaso o grupo tivesse subsistido.
Clapton passou a desfrutar de grande sucesso comercial como artista individual. Radle continuou a trabalhar com o guitarrista durante os anos 70, antes de sucumbir a uma doença renal em 1980. Gordon, coautor de "Layla", foi diagnosticado como esquizofrênico paranoico agudo no final dos anos 70, e, em 1983, recebeu condenação de confinamento, por 16 anos, em instituição psiquiátrica forense, pelo brutal assassinato de sua mãe.
